Travel Quotes

Mark Twain said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” Maya Angelou

I would like to welcome new readers to my travel blog. If you are reading this for the first time, then I suggest you first read my introduction which I wrote last November when I started this. It explains why I am writing this and it gives you a little about my background. And most importantly it explains about my list and how it works. And Now Our Next Adventure

Koala
As soon as I finish one trip I start planning my next.  And as I have gotten older I have started pushing them closer together.  I know I only have so many good travel years ahead.  I have to do the more adventurous trips now, and I can do the more sedentary excursions later in life.  The cruises, or tours, in my older age.  So what do I have planned next?

Snorkeling the GBR
On my list is - snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef.  I also have New Zealand on my list, so many things to see and do there.  So off we go again.  The trip is planned, booked, paid for - except for traveling expenses and the house/dog sitter is scheduled.  We are again going on our own, but everything is pre-booked, so we just have to get from place to place.

Fairy Penguins in Tasmania
We fly into Melbourne, Australia as our first stop.  I was planning on visiting the penguins on Philip Island while there, but read more about it and discovered its really a touristy place with an average of a thousand visitors a night.  Did not want to sit in a grandstand to see the penguins.  So instead we are only staying there for one night, and the next day we take a flight to Devonport, Tasmania.  We pick up a rental car there and drive to the town of Penguin, which is aptly named for the penguins that come ashore each night, to a small crowd of onlookers.  Much less touristy and I think more fun.

Sydney Harbor
From Devonport we fly to Sydney for a few nights, where we will sightsee on our own.  We do have a dinner cruise on a boat set up for one evening.

Then we fly to Brisbane for 3 nights.  While there we will visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where we will be able to feed kangaroos by hand, and cuddle a koala.  We also have booked an all day trip to Moreton Island to relax on the beach, snorkel, and explore.  We may even go sand dune sledding - sounds like fun!

Green Island
From there we fly to Cairns, where we will be picked up and taken to a ferry that will take us out to our island.  We will spend 3 nights at a resort on an island in the Barrier Reef.  The island is Green Island, and it is the only coral surrounded reef with a rain forest on it.  While there we will be able to use all their equipment - kayaks, snorkel gear, rides on their glass-bottom boat, etc.  We also have a one day boat trip further out into the reef for a day of snorkeling.  The island is touristy during the day, as the ferry brings out day-trippers, but in the evening when they leave we will have the island mostly to ourselves, as the resort is fairly small and is the only one on the island.

Cairns
After 3 nights on our island we will spend one night in Cairns, and we do have a tour set up for the evening.  It is the Tjapukai by Night Tour which includes a native Aussie dinner and dancing.

Then we fly off to Christchurch, New Zealand;  We will spend 3 nights there, and one of the days we will drive down to the French town of Akaroa.  My husband spent several months in New Zealand when he was in the navy.  He was in Christchurch prior to his deployment to a year in the Antarctic.  So he wants to show me some of the places he visited when he was there.

TranzAlpine Train in Arthurs Pass
When we leave Christchurch we are going by the TranzAlpine Train.  This train trip sounds really great.  It goes through Arthur's Pass and ends in Greymouth.  We will pick up a car there and drive to the Franz Josef Glacier where we will spend that night.  The next day we have set up a flightseeing trip by helicopter.  We will actually land on the glacier and walk around for awhile.

Then we drive to Queenstown for 3 nights.  We will do a day trip over to where some of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies were shot.  And we plan to take the gondola to the Skyline Tower which is above the town, and then luge downhill from there.  Sounds like a lot of fun for an old lady.
Luge downhill at Queenstrown

Steampunkers in Oamaru
From Queenstown we drive to Oamaru, which is known for its Victorian style homes and for Steam Punk, which is why we are going.  My husband is into the Steam Punk culture and wanted to see this town.  We are staying in a really nice B&B there, and we will also see penguins there, as they come into shore each night.

Then it is back to Christchurch for one night.  We then fly to the north island and to Rotorua.  We will enjoy the mud baths at Hell's Gate and explore the geysers and other sulfur areas.  We will also probably spend some time in the Polynesian Spa, just relaxing. We have an evening dinner with the Maori's which includes dancing and other entertainment, and a visit to glowworm caves.

Hobbiton

Then back in the car for the drive to Auckland.  But on the way, we will stop at Hobbiton, to see where the Hobbits lived in the movie.

From Auckland, we fly home.  Time to start planning our next adventure.

I know that we are very lucky to be able to travel as much as we do.  I wish everyone could travel to the places they dream about.  This year alone we have taken a Caribbean cruise, visited Costa Rica and Brazil, spent a month on the road visiting our cabin in Washington and going up to Canada, and now this trip.  Eventually our money will run out.  I am spending our retirement funds on travel, and when we are too old to travel, we will have to stay home.  And hopefully we will do okay.  Until then I plan to see as much of the world as possible.

My New Updated Travel List

My updated list of places to see

  • Australia/New Zealand - snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef
  • Halong Bay, Viet Nam
  • Take the Moonlight walk at Iguazu Falls, Argentina
  • Canal barge trip in France with a visit to Monet's home
  • Stay at Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu
  • St. Petersburg, Russia
  • Go zip-lining in Costa Rico
  • Night skiing in the Alps on a ski bicycle
  • Go to Cuba
  • A tall ship cruise to the Virgin Islands
Tall Ship in the Caribbean
My husband and I just returned from a 3 week trip to Africa.  While there we went to Victoria Falls, and then a 12 day safari through Kenya and Tanzania.  The safari included a balloon trip over the Masai Mara.  I know that my list did say that I wanted to take a balloon trip over the Serengeti, but my main objective was a balloon trip over a wildlife area in Africa, and the Masai Mara certainly fulfilled the requirement, and we did visit the Serengeti, which was wonderful.  We could have booked another balloon trip there, but felt it would be anticlimatic after just having done it.  We then went over to the island of Zanzibar for a couple of days, to relax before heading home.  Because of this trip I have crossed off the top 2 things on my previous list. I always add something new when I cross off something I have done.  I am now adding Cuba and a tall ship cruise to the Virgin Islands to my list.

If you would like to read about our African Adventure, I will be posting that with pictures to this blog in the next few days.  Give me a few days to catch my breath and get unpacked and then it will be posted.

Why Do We Travel, And How Do We Decide Where We Want To Go?

"To get away from one's working environment is, in a sense, to get away from one's self; and this is often the chief advantage of travel and change."
Charles Horton Cooley

I travel because I am curious. I have a desire to see new things, experience new tastes, and meet new people. But I also travel for the chance to broaden my mind. We learn more about ourselves, when we learn more about the world and its people.
A mother and daughter in Bejing, China

I also think that the more of the world you see, the more you understand the differences in people, and you become more accepting. There is so much bigotry in the world, but traveling helps to open your mind to people who are different, and to ideas that are different. You realize that really we are still very much alike.

But of course, there are many reasons to travel.  Business takes people to other places all the time.  Some people have to travel, even if they don't enjoy it.  And I do know people who would never go anywhere, they are happy staying at home.  That is fine for them.  I love my home, but would be bored to death if I just stayed here all the time.  Even when we are home, we are on the go, quite often to the beach.

Halong Bay, Viet Nam
For me, deciding where to go next is not a problem, it is anywhere I haven't been yet.  My husband pretty much leaves it up to me, he'll go anywhere, but he wants me to make the plans, which is fine.  It is what I did for a living for many years, and I enjoy it.  He occassionally will say something about wanting to go somewhere.  For instance, he spent a year in Viet Nam during the war.  Now a lot of people would not want to go back to Viet Nam, it has bad memories for some.  But like George says, "everyone's war was different".  He was on land, with a medical team, providing medical care to the local people in the city of Hue.  He would love to go back and show me the beautiful countryside that he saw while there.  And now, Viet Nam is a tourist destination.  I got excited about it when I watched a special on TV that showed Halong Bay.  So now that is on our list, and it is something that we will definitly do in the next couple of years.

I'm forever watching the Travel Channel, and shows such as Samantha Brown and Rick Steves.  I get ideas for places I want to go from seeing things on the shows.  And I get travel magazines and buy travel books whenever I can.

Venice, Italy
I seldom plan a trip back to an area that I have already been, although some areas do overlap, so I may end up back in a city I have been to before, just because it is there in the same area and it makes sense to use it as a base to fly into or out of.  The exception to my not returning to the same place will come in 5 years.  For our 25th wedding anniversary George surprised me with a trip to Italy, a place I had always wanted to go.  We have decided that for our 50th anniversary we will return to Italy.  We may cover some new territory in Italy, but we most definitly will return to both Rome and Venice.  We have some wonderful memories of that first trip, and we plan to create some new ones on the new trip.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Africa
I would also like to be able to say that I have visited every continenet, but I haven't.  We have of course visited Europe and Asia, and North America.  We have covered those 3 pretty extensively.  I can say I have been on the continent of Africa, because I have been to Morocco, but that hardly counts.  Next year we will be able to really claim that continent, as we plan to visit Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Africa and Zimbabwe, all in one trip.  I have not yet visited South America, although I have things on my list that would take me there, I just haven't made it yet.  I have been to Belize in Central America, but very briefly.   I also have not been to Australia and New Zealand, both places my husband has been.  He went to those places when he was in the Navy, and again, he says he'd really like to return and show me those places.  They are on the list.  I may never make it to the continent of Antartica, but my husband has also been there.  He did a year in the navy, stationed at McMurdo Sound on Antartica.  It was a long year of separation for us, when our daughter was quite young.  There are cruises that do make a stop in Antartica, so who knows, maybe someday we will do that.

In the meantime, I do have enough things on my list to keep me occupied for a few years, and I already have some new things to add to the list as I cross things off.

So, why do you travel and where do you want to go?

My new updated Travel List

"Goals that are not written down are just wishes."
 Unknown

To my readers who have been following this blog, you know I have a list of 10 Places To See or Do Before I Die.  But I don't just keep deleting as I do things, until I run out of things to do.  Instead, as I do things on my list, I cross them off and add new places.  That way there are always 10 things to see or do.  Well, we just got home from a cruise, which we took to celebrate our 45th anniversary.  We actually flew to Buffalo, New York, went over to Niagara Falls for 2 nights, then drove up to Montreal and got on our Holland America ship, the Maasdam.  The ship sailed up the St. Lawrence River and stopped in Quebec, Charlottetown on Prince Edward, Sydney, Halifax, Bar Harbor and ended in Boston.  On my list of "10 Things to See or Do" I had both Niagara Falls and Quebec listed.  So those 2 things are coming off my list and here is the new list:

Iguassu Falls, at night
My (Updated) List of Places to & Thing To Do Before I Die

1.  Tanzania & Zanzibar - balloon trip over the Serengeti
2.  Victoria Falls in Africa
3.  Night skiing on a ski bicycle in the Alps
4.  Australia/New Zealand - snorkeling the great barrier reef
HaLong Bay, Vietnam
5.  HaLong Bay, Viet Nam
6.  Take the Moonlight walk at Iguazu Falls, Argentina
7.  Canal barge trip in France with a visit to Monet's home
8.  Stay at Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu
9.  St. Petersburg, Russia
10. Go zip-lining in Costa Rico

Balloon over the Serengeti
We are currently making plans to do the first 2 things on the list next year.  All three places can be combined on one trip to Africa.  So hopefully, those will come off next year.

As we have done with all of our recent travels, my husband writes emails home to family and friends and when we get home we put that into a report with pictures.  If you would like to read about our most recent trip to Niagara Falls and our cruise on the St. Lawrence, which took us to Quebec and other places, go to the side bar under Trip Reports of Trips we have taken and it is the last in the list.  Or you can click on this link and it will take you to it.
